The Wellington District Contest

The band met at the bandrooms at nine am, and from there we car pooled out to Southwards. The band then performed a Hymn and Test piece in the morning session. The hymn "Dear Lord and Father" went pretty well with no major worries. Without leaving the stage the band then played their test piece entitled "The Force of Destiny" by well known classical composer Verdi, this piece is technically very demanding, and whilst the band played well, a few sections of the band would've perhaps liked one or two more rehearsals to work on some of the harder tutti passages.

It was now time for the afternoon session of the competition dubbed "The Entertainment Contest" The band had planned a program of all English music, which included serious works such as the Earl of Oxfords March, and some not so serious works such as the Floral Dance. The program featured the bands principal cornet player Danny Kirgan who played My Love is like a Red, Red Rose for solo cornet and brass band. One of the bands back row cornet players Tereasa Darbyshire did a fantastic job with the mic, linking the program together nicely, whilst still putting on her best brittish accent. Even though there were a few technical difficulties when some of the "gags" didn't quite come off, All in all we were pretty happy with how we played and feel that we pulled off the program very nicely.

Then time for the results. The Band was very pleased to top off one of their most successfull years in winning form!! The band managed to take home all band event trophies, a truly remarkable result when you consider that at the same time last year there wasn't even a full band on stage! Many thanks goes to our musical director David Bremner for having the patience and leadership to guide such a young band to success during to 2007!

There was only one more event for the band on sunday, a celebration at the pub!!
